Why Is Planet Labs Stock Rising in Pre-Market Trading?

By Fiona Craig | October 21, 2026, 6:13 AM

Planet Labs (NYSE:PL) shares gained 2.7% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after investment bank Berenberg reaffirmed its Buy rating and $25.00 price target for the satellite imaging company. The research update followed meetings with Planet Labs President and Chief Financial Officer Ashley Johnson and Senior Vice President of Finance Tina Hristova.

The share price movement also coincided with gains in US technology stocks and followed the company’s latest satellite launch.

What Did Berenberg Say About Planet Labs?

Berenberg maintained its Buy recommendation and $25.00 price target in a research note published on Tuesday evening, following discussions with senior management.

The German investment bank highlighted three areas supporting its assessment: the economics and renewal potential of satellite services contracts, demand from government and defence customers, and opportunities to expand into commercial markets through artificial intelligence applications.

The analysts attributed recent weakness in Planet Labs shares primarily to broader economic conditions, particularly elevated interest rates, rather than changes in the company’s underlying operations.

Berenberg’s assessment reflects the bank’s investment outlook and does not establish whether the company’s future financial performance will meet those expectations.

How Is Planet Labs Expanding Its Satellite Network?

Planet Labs recently completed the launch of its Pelican-12 satellite aboard a SpaceX rideshare mission, continuing the expansion of its Earth observation constellation.

The launch marked the company’s 25th spacecraft placed into orbit during 2026 and its fifth Pelican-class high-resolution satellite launched this year.

The Pelican satellites form part of Planet Labs’ efforts to expand its high-resolution Earth imaging capabilities and support services for government, defence and commercial customers.

The company’s satellite deployment programme is relevant to its ability to maintain and expand imaging coverage, although the financial contribution of additional spacecraft will depend on customer demand and contract activity.

Is the Broader Stock Market Contributing to the Increase?

Planet Labs’ pre-market advance occurred alongside gains in major US equity indices, with the Nasdaq rising approximately 0.7%.

The broader movement in technology shares provided market context for the increase in Planet Labs stock, although the extent to which general market conditions contributed to the company’s individual share price movement cannot be determined.

Despite Wednesday’s advance, Planet Labs shares remained below their 52-week high of $51.76. The stock’s 52-week low stood at $10.52.

The range illustrates the variation in the company’s share price over the past year as investors have assessed its growth prospects, financial performance and market conditions.

What Should Investors Watch Next?

Planet Labs is expected to publish its next fiscal quarterly results in early December, providing updated information on revenue, contract activity and operational performance.

The results may offer further detail on the company’s government and defence business, commercial customer demand and the financial implications of its satellite expansion programme.

Investors will also be able to compare the company’s reported performance with the assumptions underlying Berenberg’s maintained Buy rating and $25.00 price target.

For Wednesday’s session, the analyst reaffirmation, recent satellite launch and gains in technology stocks were the principal developments accompanying Planet Labs’ 2.7% pre-market increase.
