Super Micro Computer (NASDAQ:SMCI) shares rose 12.9% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after the artificial intelligence server manufacturer raised its preliminary revenue and gross margin forecasts for the first quarter of fiscal 2027.
The company reported expectations for quarterly revenue substantially above its previous guidance and analyst estimates, citing increased demand for AI infrastructure platforms.
The announcement, released after Tuesday’s market close, also contributed to gains in shares of other companies operating in the AI server market.
Super Micro increased its first-quarter fiscal 2027 revenue outlook to between $18.5 billion and $19.5 billion, compared with its previous forecast of $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion.
The midpoint of the revised range is $19 billion, approximately $4 billion above the midpoint of the company’s earlier guidance.
Wall Street analysts had expected revenue of around $15 billion, meaning the revised midpoint was approximately 26.7% higher than consensus estimates.
Management attributed the increase primarily to greater demand for the company’s AI infrastructure platforms.
The revised forecast indicates that Super Micro expects higher quarterly sales than previously anticipated, although the final figures remain subject to confirmation in its full financial results.
Alongside its revenue guidance, Super Micro raised its expected gross margin range to between 12.0% and 12.5%.
The company had previously forecast gross margins of 10.4% to 10.8%.
Management attributed the revision to a more favourable combination of customers and products.
Gross margin measures the proportion of revenue remaining after the direct costs associated with producing and delivering goods and services.
The higher forecast is relevant because investors have been assessing profitability across the AI server industry, where substantial hardware costs and pricing competition can influence margins.
However, the revised guidance relates to the current reporting period and does not establish whether the higher margin level will be maintained in future quarters.
Citi maintained its Neutral rating on Super Micro following the preliminary financial update.
The bank’s position reflected continued caution regarding the sustainability of gross margins and the working capital requirements associated with the company’s operations.
Working capital is particularly relevant for hardware manufacturers because rapid sales growth can require additional investment in inventory, components and customer fulfilment.
Separately, Rosenblatt Securities had previously reiterated its Buy rating and $51 price target for Super Micro, citing its assessment of the company’s valuation.
The differing recommendations illustrate how analysts are weighing the company’s revenue growth opportunities against its financial and operational requirements.
Super Micro’s revised outlook also coincided with gains in other companies involved in AI computing infrastructure.
Dell Technologies (NYSE:DELL) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE:HPE) advanced in extended trading following the announcement.
Both companies participate in the server and enterprise infrastructure markets, making demand for AI computing equipment relevant to their business prospects.
However, Super Micro’s higher revenue forecast does not necessarily indicate that its competitors will experience equivalent sales growth or margin improvements.
The broader US stock market also provided a positive backdrop, with the S&P 500 gaining approximately 0.2% and the Nasdaq advancing 0.7%.
Asian equity markets moved higher overnight, with interest in AI-related companies also influenced by Super Micro’s guidance and developments involving SpaceX.
Before Wednesday’s increase, Super Micro shares had experienced a period of pressure associated with company-specific developments and investor concerns.
These included a contractor’s guilty plea in a case involving the diversion of AI servers, alongside continuing questions about corporate governance.
The preliminary financial update provided new information about the company’s operating performance, although it did not directly address those separate matters.
Investors will therefore have additional factors to assess alongside the company’s revenue and profitability outlook.
Super Micro is scheduled to publish its complete first-quarter fiscal 2027 financial results and hold an earnings conference call on 3 November.
The announcement is expected to provide further details about revenue, gross margins, operating expenses and the company’s financial position.
Investors will also be monitoring management’s commentary on AI infrastructure demand, customer concentration, inventory requirements and future profitability.
The full results will allow market participants to compare the preliminary forecasts with the company’s reported financial performance.
For Wednesday’s pre-market session, the increase in revenue guidance from a $15 billion midpoint to $19 billion, together with the higher gross margin forecast, accompanied the 12.9% rise in Super Micro shares.
