Smurfit Westrock plc (NYSE:SW) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings and revenue below analyst expectations on Wednesday, as rising freight and energy costs and weaker packaging volumes affected profitability.
The packaging manufacturer reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.45, below the consensus estimate of $0.60. Revenue increased 2% year over year to $8.16 billion, compared with $8.00 billion in the corresponding period of 2025, but missed analysts’ expectations of $8.27 billion.
Shares were largely unchanged in after-hours trading, edging up 0.02% following the announcement.
Smurfit Westrock reported adjusted EBITDA of $1.205 billion, compared with $1.302 billion in the previous year.
The adjusted EBITDA margin declined to 14.8% from 16.3%, reflecting higher operating costs and softer converting volumes.
Chief Executive Officer Tony Smurfit said the company had absorbed approximately $700 million in additional freight and energy costs for the full year, substantially exceeding earlier expectations.
“Set against unprecedented cost inflation and somewhat weaker than anticipated converting volumes, our third quarter performance of Adjusted EBITDA of $1,205 million with an Adjusted EBITDA Margin of 14.8% represents a resilient performance,” Smurfit said.
The combination of inflationary pressures and weaker demand affected profitability despite the increase in quarterly revenue.
Smurfit Westrock’s North America segment generated adjusted EBITDA of $760 million, down from $810 million in the prior-year quarter.
The segment’s adjusted EBITDA margin declined to 15.6%, compared with 17.2% a year earlier.
In Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific (EMEA & APAC), adjusted EBITDA decreased to $379 million from $419 million, while the margin fell to 13.4% from 14.8%.
Latin America delivered higher adjusted EBITDA of $126 million, compared with $116 million in the corresponding period last year.
The region recorded an adjusted EBITDA margin of 21.4%, making it the strongest-performing geographical segment by margin during the quarter.
Following the third-quarter performance, Smurfit Westrock reduced its full-year adjusted EBITDA guidance to approximately $4.7 billion.
The revised outlook reflects the impact of higher freight and energy expenses, alongside weaker-than-anticipated converting volumes.
The company continues to face cost pressures across its operations, with the effects particularly evident in North America and EMEA & APAC.
The reduction in guidance follows the decline in quarterly adjusted EBITDA and operating margins.
Smurfit Westrock generated $874 million in net cash from operating activities during the third quarter, compared with $1.133 billion in the previous year.
The decrease reflected weaker cash generation alongside the pressures affecting operating profitability.
The company also declared a quarterly dividend of $0.4523 per share.
The dividend is scheduled for payment on December 10, 2026, to shareholders of record as of November 13, 2026.
Smurfit Westrock’s third-quarter results fell below analyst expectations, with adjusted earnings per share of $0.45 and revenue of $8.16 billion.
Although sales increased 2% year over year, adjusted EBITDA declined and margins narrowed as higher operating costs and weaker converting volumes affected performance.
Latin America reported improved profitability, while North America and EMEA & APAC recorded lower adjusted EBITDA.
The company now expects full-year adjusted EBITDA of approximately $4.7 billion, reflecting the continuing impact of cost inflation and market conditions.
