C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc. (NASDAQ:CHRW) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings and revenue above analyst expectations on Wednesday, although shares declined 1.80% in pre-market trading as investors assessed higher operating expenses and weaker cash generation.
The logistics company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.80, exceeding the consensus estimate of $1.75. Revenue increased 29.5% year over year to $5.36 billion, compared with analysts’ expectations of $4.92 billion.
The revenue increase was primarily supported by higher transportation pricing across truckload, ocean, less-than-truckload and air freight services, alongside increased truckload volumes.
C.H. Robinson reported a 14.5% increase in adjusted gross profit to $808.4 million, reflecting improved transportation pricing and shipment activity.
The company’s North American Surface Transportation segment recorded year-over-year volume growth of 3.5%, marking its 14th consecutive quarter of outperforming the broader market.
Truckload adjusted gross profit per shipment increased 17%, despite higher costs in the spot freight market.
Chief Executive Officer Dave Bozeman attributed the company’s earnings performance to its operational strategy.
“Our ability to consistently deliver secular earnings growth over the last three years is a result of the disciplined execution of our Lean AI strategy,” Bozeman said.
The company’s Lean AI strategy focuses on improving operational efficiency through process optimisation and the application of artificial intelligence.
C.H. Robinson reported operating income of $271.8 million, representing a 23.1% increase from the previous year.
However, operating expenses rose 10.6% to $536.6 million, primarily due to higher incentive compensation and claims-related costs.
Expenses also included a $12.2 million impairment charge associated with the lease of the company’s Kansas City regional centre.
The increase in operating expenses partially offset the benefits of stronger revenue and adjusted gross profit.
The company’s Global Forwarding segment reported an adjusted operating margin of 36.2%, representing an improvement of 1,060 basis points compared with the previous year.
The result met the segment’s mid-cycle operating margin target, reflecting improved profitability within its international freight forwarding operations.
The margin expansion contributed to the company’s overall increase in operating income during the quarter.
C.H. Robinson generated $124.1 million in cash from operating activities, compared with $275.4 million in the corresponding period last year.
The decline was primarily attributed to unfavourable working capital movements associated with higher transportation rates.
Despite the reduction in operating cash flow, the company returned $289.1 million to shareholders during the quarter.
This included $214.3 million in share repurchases and $74.8 million in dividend payments.
C.H. Robinson’s third-quarter results exceeded market expectations, with adjusted earnings per share reaching $1.80 and revenue increasing 29.5% to $5.36 billion.
Higher transportation pricing and truckload volumes supported revenue growth, while adjusted gross profit increased 14.5%.
Operating income also improved, although higher compensation, claims expenses and an impairment charge contributed to increased operating costs.
The Global Forwarding segment achieved its mid-cycle margin target, while operating cash flow declined because of working capital pressures.
Shares fell 1.80% before the opening bell following the announcement.
