FinWise Crushes Estimates, But A One-Time Gain And Pass-Through Accounting Do Much Of The Lifting Ahead Of A Thinner 2027 Growth Runway

FinWise Bancorp (FINW) quarterly results card

FinWise Bancorp (NASDAQ: FINW) reported third-quarter earnings of $0.76 per share from continuing operations, far above the $0.19 consensus. That was a 300.0% surprise and a 123.5% year-over-year gain. Revenue of $107.6 million beat the $41.62 million estimate by 158.5% and grew 156.1% from a year ago. Including a small loss from the discontinued credit card business, GAAP diluted EPS was $0.73, versus $0.15 in the second quarter. The quarter breaks a run of credit-driven disappointments in the first half. Originations hit a record, credit-enhanced balances nearly doubled and credit costs fell sharply. Even so, the size of the beat overstates how much the earnings power changed, and the quality of the beat deserves scrutiny.

Two items inflate the headline. The first is a $6.5 million bargain purchase gain from the July Tallied acquisition. Because the gain was excluded from taxable income, it accounts for roughly $0.47 of per-share earnings on its own. The second is accounting, which accounts for much of the revenue beat. Credit enhancement income of $45.4 million is fully offset by a matching provision on partner-guaranteed loans. Another $24.3 million of guarantee and servicing expense eats into the reported 19.58% net interest margin. Stripping out the credit-enhancement pass-throughs, adjusted operating revenue was $33.0 million, compared with $23.8 million in the second quarter and $25.9 million a year ago. Net interest margin after partner costs was 8.31%, compared with 7.44% and 8.13%. On that basis the improvement is real but measured. Excluding the gain, continuing earnings still cleared consensus, though by far less than the headline suggests.

The operating story is genuinely better. Originations reached $2.1 billion, against the $1.6 billion management had guided on the prior call. Credit-enhanced balances jumped to $146.2 million from $74.2 million after a slow-ramping partner accelerated. That reverses a stall that had led management to withdraw its growth guidance in the second quarter. Credit also improved:

  • Net charge-offs on loans without credit enhancement fell to $2.6 million from $5.2 million.
  • Core-portfolio charge-offs were just $0.4 million.
  • The provision on retained risk dropped to $1.4 million from $6.0 million.
  • Nonperforming loans edged down to $37.1 million, from $49.8 million in the first quarter.

Management raised several forward markers. Fourth-quarter originations are tracking $1.5 to $1.6 billion, now framed as a quarterly run rate. The non-credit-enhanced charge-off guide tightened to about $4 million, and expected nonperforming-loan migration was lowered to $5 to $7 million.

Management also tempered its own numbers. It said third-quarter margin and charge-offs were flattered by one-time tax-refund interest and lumpy loan resolutions, and should not be treated as a run rate. Core expenses excluding credit-enhancement costs rose to about $18.4 million from $15.6 million, driven by Tallied staff, and no expense guidance was given. The 2027 outlook is the bigger concern. Credit-enhanced growth is guided at only about 5% organically until new partners launch, and SBA loan sales are expected to decline. Partner concentration is another issue. Upstart's sponsorship ended September 30, which management called immaterial. Two other partners are pursuing bank charters, and their contracts carry no exclusivity, though they run into late 2028 and early 2029.

The catalysts are mostly further out. The pipeline now holds 4 signed agreements and 5 term sheets, most launching over the next three quarters. It includes FinWise's first payments contract and a prepaid partner signed in the second quarter. Other near-term items include:

  • About $20 million of additional credit-enhanced growth expected in the fourth quarter.
  • A planned securitization of SBA unguaranteed balances.
  • Faster buybacks: 159,099 shares repurchased in the quarter and a new 10b5-1 plan approved.

Capital supports that agenda, with tangible book value of $15.14 and an 18.1% leverage ratio.

The market was not positioned for a quarter like this. Investor sentiment deteriorated meaningfully into the report, falling from -0.27 to -0.55. Shares slid 23.4% from the opening price after the prior report to $10.45, about 28.6% below the 200-day moving average. They had set a 52-week low of $9.58 on October 20 and entered the release only about 9% above it. Price and AVWAP trend readings remain negative, while sequential growth and momentum are neutral. With the stock trading at roughly 69% of tangible book, even a partially discounted version of this quarter challenges the pessimism.

The bottom line is that FinWise delivered a real operational inflection in originations, credit-enhanced balances and credit quality. However, the headline beat is magnified by an untaxed one-time gain and gross-up accounting. Bears still have legitimate ammunition: rising core expenses, non-repeatable margin help, a slower 2027 credit-enhanced outlook and charter-driven partner attrition risk. The next leg depends on whether pipeline partners launch on schedule and offset that deceleration.
