MicroVision Expands FieldAI Partnership to Advance Lidar Technology for Autonomous Robotics

By Fiona Craig | November 02, 2026, 6:43 AM

MicroVision, Inc. (NASDAQ:MVIS) has announced an expansion of its collaboration with FieldAI, a developer of autonomous robotic systems, to advance lidar-based perception technology for government and industrial applications.

The expanded relationship follows testing and demonstrations of MicroVision’s lidar sensors across autonomous ground and aerial platforms, as the companies explore opportunities to integrate advanced perception capabilities into robotic systems.

According to MicroVision, the collaboration will focus on technologies supporting autonomous navigation, environmental mapping, obstacle detection and mission execution.

FieldAI has also purchased MicroVision MOVIA sensors for development and evaluation activities associated with government and industrial robotics programmes.

MicroVision IRIS Lidar Tested on Autonomous Ground Vehicles

The expanded collaboration follows evaluations of MicroVision’s IRIS long-range lidar sensor on autonomous ground vehicles.

The testing focused on the sensor’s potential to support perception capabilities required by robotic systems operating without continuous human control.

Lidar technology uses laser-based measurements to identify surrounding objects and generate spatial information, helping autonomous platforms understand and navigate their environments.

Long-range perception is particularly relevant for unmanned ground vehicles, where detecting obstacles and understanding the surrounding terrain can support navigation and operational planning.

The companies are assessing how MicroVision’s technology could be incorporated into a broader range of autonomous systems.

The announcement did not disclose specific testing performance figures or details of potential deployment contracts.

MOVIA Air Plus Supports Real-Time 3D Mapping Demonstrations

MicroVision also highlighted demonstrations of its extended perception technology using an unmanned aerial platform.

The solution combines the Robinson Unmanned Spirit drone platform with MicroVision’s MOVIA Air Plus lidar sensor.

The integrated system enables real-time, colourised three-dimensional lidar mapping, providing spatial information that can be used to assess the surrounding environment.

The mapping capability has also been integrated with the Android Team Awareness Kit (ATAK), a platform used for situational awareness and operational coordination.

This integration is intended to make lidar-generated mapping information available within an operational environment.

The demonstrations illustrate how MicroVision’s perception technology can be applied beyond ground vehicles to support unmanned aerial systems.

FieldAI Purchases MOVIA Sensors for Government and Industrial Evaluations

As part of the collaboration, FieldAI has purchased MicroVision MOVIA sensors for development and evaluation activities.

The sensors will support work involving autonomous robotic systems across both government and industrial programmes.

The purchase represents a further step in the companies’ technical relationship following earlier testing of MicroVision’s perception solutions.

FieldAI is evaluating the sensors for potential use in robotic platforms that require environmental awareness, obstacle detection and autonomous navigation capabilities.

The companies are also exploring opportunities to expand the adoption of MicroVision’s technology across additional applications.

However, MicroVision did not disclose the number of sensors purchased, the financial value of the transaction or any associated revenue expectations.

MicroVision Highlights Flexibility of Its Lidar Portfolio

MicroVision Chief Executive Officer Glen DeVos said the company’s range of lidar technologies is designed to address different perception requirements across autonomous robotic systems.

DeVos highlighted applications ranging from long-distance sensing for autonomous ground vehicles to real-time three-dimensional mapping and short-range obstacle detection.

The company’s portfolio includes the IRIS long-range lidar sensor and the MOVIA sensor family, which can support different operating environments and robotic platforms.

According to management, this range of capabilities provides flexibility for developers seeking to integrate perception technology into next-generation autonomous systems.

The expanded FieldAI collaboration is intended to demonstrate how these products can be used across multiple robotics applications rather than being limited to a single vehicle or platform.

FieldAI Sees Opportunities for Broader Technology Adoption

Shehryar Khattak, Director of Technology at FieldAI, said the companies are extending their evaluation activities following successful testing across uncrewed ground and aerial systems.

The next stage of the relationship will focus on identifying opportunities for wider adoption of MicroVision’s perception solutions within federal government and industrial programmes.

FieldAI’s work involves developing autonomous robotic systems, where reliable perception technology is an important component of navigation and operational decision-making.

The collaboration will assess how MicroVision’s lidar products can support these requirements across different robotic platforms.

Although the companies have identified potential applications, the announcement did not confirm additional commercial deployment agreements or provide a timetable for broader adoption.

Autonomous Navigation and Obstacle Detection Among Target Applications

MicroVision and FieldAI are exploring several potential applications for their combined technologies.

These include autonomous mobility, navigation, environmental mapping, obstacle detection and mission execution.

The technologies are intended to help robotic systems identify their surroundings and support autonomous operations in government and industrial environments.

For ground-based robots, lidar sensors can provide information about obstacles and terrain conditions, while aerial platforms can use the technology to generate detailed three-dimensional maps.

The companies are evaluating how these capabilities could be incorporated into autonomous systems operating across different environments.

The work reflects the broader use of perception technologies in robotics, where accurate environmental information is essential for navigation and operational tasks.

MicroVision Outlook Focuses on Robotics Integration and Commercial Opportunities

The expanded collaboration with FieldAI represents another step in MicroVision’s efforts to develop applications for its lidar technology beyond conventional vehicle sensing.

Testing of the IRIS sensor, demonstrations involving MOVIA Air Plus and FieldAI’s purchase of MOVIA sensors provide a foundation for further technical evaluations.

The companies intend to explore opportunities for deploying the technology across government and industrial autonomous robotics programmes.

However, the announcement did not include financial terms for the expanded collaboration, projected revenue contributions or confirmed large-scale deployment commitments.

Investors will be monitoring whether the ongoing evaluations lead to additional sensor orders, broader integration agreements or commercial deployments.

The next phase of the partnership will focus on determining how MicroVision’s perception technology can support autonomous robotic systems across a wider range of operational applications.
