IonQ Partners with QuantumCT to Expand Quantum Computing Access Across Connecticut

By Fiona Craig | November 04, 2026, 10:37 AM

IonQ (NYSE:IONQ) announced a partnership with QuantumCT, Connecticut’s statewide quantum innovation initiative, to provide universities, researchers, startups and businesses with access to its trapped-ion quantum computing systems.

Under the agreement, QuantumCT will purchase cloud computing resources from IonQ on behalf of participating organisations across Connecticut, supporting research, technology development and commercial applications.

The contract provides more than 150 hours of cloud runtime on IonQ’s quantum computers, allowing participating institutions to gain practical experience with advanced quantum hardware.

Partnership Supports Quantum Research and Development

The agreement will enable Connecticut-based academic institutions, research laboratories and enterprises to use IonQ’s systems for projects involving quantum algorithms, optimisation, materials science and workforce development.

QuantumCT is led by the University of Connecticut and Yale University, with support from government, industry and academic partners.

The initiative aims to strengthen Connecticut’s position in quantum information science by connecting researchers and businesses with computing infrastructure and technical expertise.

Scott Millard, Chief Business Officer at IonQ, said access to advanced systems was important for developing regional quantum technology capabilities.

“By securing access to quantum computing resources, QuantumCT is giving Connecticut’s universities, startups, and enterprises the opportunity to build practical quantum capabilities today,” Millard said.

QuantumCT Targets Commercial Applications

QuantumCT intends to use the partnership to help participating organisations move beyond theoretical research towards practical applications of quantum computing.

Vivek Ramakrishnan, Interim Chief Executive Officer of QuantumCT, said the agreement would provide access to IonQ’s trapped-ion technology alongside technical support.

“Expanding access to advanced quantum computing resources is an important step in helping Connecticut’s researchers, startups, and industry partners move from exploration to practical application,” Ramakrishnan said.

He added that QuantumCT plans to develop a broader computing environment incorporating multiple quantum technologies, allowing researchers to select appropriate systems for different applications.

The initiative also supports workforce development and efforts to establish new quantum technology businesses within the state.

IonQ Expands Institutional Access to Quantum Technology

The partnership extends IonQ’s involvement in academic and commercial quantum computing initiatives.

The Maryland-based company develops quantum computing, networking, sensing and security technologies, with its computing systems accessible through major cloud providers.

IonQ has previously worked with organisations including Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca and NVIDIA on applications spanning materials science, pharmaceutical research and other computational challenges.

The QuantumCT agreement provides another channel for researchers and businesses to access its commercial quantum computing infrastructure.

Outlook for IonQ

The partnership expands IonQ’s reach within Connecticut’s research and technology ecosystem while supporting QuantumCT’s efforts to develop practical quantum computing capabilities.

Access to more than 150 hours of cloud runtime will allow participating organisations to evaluate quantum applications and develop technical expertise using IonQ’s systems.

The companies did not disclose the financial value of the agreement.

Future developments will depend on research outcomes, institutional participation and the potential commercial applications emerging from the programme.
