Exzeo Group (NYSE: XZO) reported third-quarter earnings of $0.25 per share, a penny above the $0.24 consensus for a 4.2% surprise. Revenue of $55.19 million topped the $54.9 million estimate by 0.5%. Both earnings and revenue were flat year over year. The headline beat, however, is the least important part of this report. Management cut its year-end managed-premium outlook to roughly $1.34 billion from the $1.55 billion target it had reaffirmed on each of the prior three calls. That is the central tension: a quarter that technically cleared the bar arrived alongside the clearest signal yet that Exzeo's growth trajectory has stalled.
The quality of the beat deserves scrutiny. GAAP net income rose to $22.3 million from $21.2 million, but operating income actually fell to $26.2 million from $27.3 million. The improvement came below the operating line, where interest income tripled to $3.3 million from $1.1 million on a much larger cash and securities balance. Selling, general and administrative expense jumped to $5.6 million from $3.9 million. That pushed adjusted EBITDA down to $27.6 million from $28.7 million and compressed the adjusted EBITDA margin to 51% from 55%. Per-share earnings were flat despite higher net income because weighted shares rose to 87.5 million from 78.7 million, even with buybacks. Adjusted revenue, which strips out pass-through outsourced claims fees, did grow to $53.9 million from $52.4 million. That is modest core-platform growth that was offset at the top line by lower catastrophe-related claims revenue.
The call made the deceleration harder to ignore. Revenue of $55 million trailed both Q2's $58 million and Q1's $56 million. Adjusted EBITDA margin slid from 54% in Q4 FY25 to 53% in Q2 and 51% now. Annual recurring revenue requires context. The release highlights a year-over-year increase to $205.8 million from $192.4 million. Sequentially, though, ARR has fallen for three straight quarters, from $216 million in Q1 to $211 million in Q2 to $206 million in Q3. Managed premium of $1.4 billion is up from $1.2 billion a year ago, yet the new $1.34 billion year-end guide implies a sequential decline. Management attributed the pressure to a soft Florida and broader insurance market. That matters because the release itself flags that substantially all of Exzeo's revenue still depends on HCI Group. Results also landed only within the $28 million to $31 million pre-tax guide, ending the streak of beats from Q1 and Q2.
Guidance reinforced the softer tone. The fourth-quarter pre-tax income guide of $26 million to $29 million sits below Q3's roughly $30 million. The full-year $115 million to $125 million range was not repeated. Year-to-date pre-tax income of about $88 million plus the Q4 guide implies roughly $114 million to $117 million, at or below the old low end.
The call preserved a credible, if longer-dated, growth story. Exzeo's in-house HO3 homeowners product with carrier Core added more than $40 million of premium in about six months, going from concept in late January to revenue by early April. Management plans three to five new turnkey products next year across home, auto and flood, and said unnamed carriers have asked to use HO3. Agent engagement is building, with about 700,000 quotes year to date at roughly 25,000 per week and about $0.80 per quote. Still, GEICO's contribution remains unquantified. The CEO framed the AI opportunity as one to three years out and deferred trajectory clarity to "this time next year," so bears have legitimate ammunition that the narrative is shifting from near-term execution to longer-dated promises.
The balance sheet gives management room to wait. Cash and investments total $350.2 million with no debt. Third-quarter free cash flow edged up to $31.4 million, and the company repurchased about $7.0 million of stock in the quarter, roughly $17 million year to date, with $20 million remaining under the August authorization. Two blemishes stand out: year-to-date free cash flow fell to $71.7 million from $86.6 million on collection timing, and the bond portfolio produced a $6.0 million unrealized loss in other comprehensive income this quarter.
The market setup is more complicated than the surprise implies. Investor sentiment improved meaningfully into the report, rising from -0.58 to -0.26, but it remains negative. The stock entered earnings at $17.79, up 4.0% from the open after the August report and 11.4% above its 200-day moving average. Shares sat just 3.5% below their inter-earnings high of $18.44, set two days before the release, after rallying about 31% from an early-October low of $13.62. Momentum and AVWAP trend readings were positive heading in. In short, shares were priced for steadier execution than the guidance cut delivered.
The bottom line is that Exzeo's penny beat came from interest income and a narrow consensus bar, not operating momentum. Operating income, margins and sequential ARR all moved the wrong way, and the managed-premium target was cut sharply. The HO3 launch, new product pipeline and a cash-rich balance sheet keep the longer-term story alive. Yet with the stock rallying into the print near the top of its range, investors now have to underwrite a growth reacceleration that management itself says may not be visible until next year.
