Virgin Galactic Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:SPCE) has entered into a three-year agreement with nonprofit organization Space for Humanity to conduct three dedicated suborbital spaceflight missions, potentially carrying a combined total of 18 participants.
Under the agreement, each charter flight will accommodate up to six astronauts, with the option to allocate cabin space to scientific research equipment. The missions will support Space for Humanity’s Citizen Astronaut Program and its Space for Humanity Labs initiative, which focuses on research conducted in microgravity and zero-gravity environments.
The companies did not disclose the financial terms of the arrangement or announce specific flight dates.
The agreement provides for three dedicated spaceflight charters during a three-year period.
Each mission will feature a six-seat cabin, allowing Space for Humanity to fly up to 18 participants across the three flights if all available seats are used.
The organization will have the option to replace one or more passenger seats with a specialized equipment rack designed to accommodate research experiments.
This configuration would reduce the number of available passenger seats on the relevant mission while providing space for scientific payloads.
Space for Humanity may use the research configuration as part of its Labs programme, which supports experiments conducted in microgravity and zero-gravity conditions.
The agreement does not specify how many seats will be allocated to research equipment or how many participants will ultimately fly.
Space for Humanity will oversee the application and selection process for participants in the three missions.
The nonprofit plans to recruit candidates internationally, including educators, artists, scientists and leaders from different fields.
Each charter is expected to carry a crew consisting entirely of participants selected through Space for Humanity.
The missions will form part of the organization’s efforts to expand access to spaceflight through its Citizen Astronaut Program.
Virgin Galactic will provide spaceflight readiness training for selected participants at Spaceport America in New Mexico.
The companies have not identified any astronauts for the planned flights or announced when the selection process will be completed.
The partnership also provides Space for Humanity with access to Virgin Galactic’s existing suborbital research capabilities.
Virgin Galactic said it has carried scientific research on seven suborbital spaceflights to date, including both autonomous experiments and research activities conducted with human involvement.
The company’s spacecraft can accommodate specialized research equipment in place of passenger seats, allowing scientific payloads to be included alongside crew members.
Space for Humanity may use this capability through its Space for Humanity Labs initiative.
The programme is intended to support scientific investigations that require access to microgravity or zero-gravity environments.
The announcement did not identify specific experiments or research institutions that will participate in the three charter missions.
Megan Prichard, Chief Growth Officer of Virgin Galactic, commented on the planned missions and their potential contribution to Space for Humanity’s activities.
“Three missions over three years is a real opportunity for transformation and impact,” Prichard said.
The agreement establishes a framework for multiple dedicated flights rather than a single charter mission.
Virgin Galactic will be responsible for providing the spaceflight services and preparing participants for their missions.
The company has not disclosed the expected revenue contribution from the agreement.
Space for Humanity Executive Director Antonio Peronace said the agreement coincides with the organization’s expansion of its Citizen Astronaut Program and the introduction of its Space for Humanity Labs initiative.
“We’re reigniting our well-established Citizen Astronaut Program on a scale larger than ever before,” Peronace said.
The Citizen Astronaut Program focuses on selecting individuals from different professional and personal backgrounds to participate in spaceflight.
The Labs initiative adds a scientific research component, allowing the organization to support experiments using the research capabilities available on Virgin Galactic missions.
The three charter flights will provide opportunities for Space for Humanity to pursue both programmes under the new agreement.
Virgin Galactic and Space for Humanity have not announced specific dates for the three charter flights.
The companies also have not disclosed the identities of the participants, the allocation of passenger seats and research equipment, or the financial value of the agreement.
Although the arrangement covers three years, the announcement does not establish a detailed mission schedule.
The final number of astronauts carried will depend in part on whether Space for Humanity chooses to replace passenger seats with research equipment.
Further information about the missions, participant selection and research activities may be provided as preparations progress.
The three-year agreement establishes plans for Virgin Galactic to conduct three dedicated charter missions for Space for Humanity, with capacity for up to 18 participants across the flights.
The arrangement combines passenger spaceflight with the option to conduct scientific research using specialized equipment installed in the spacecraft cabin.
Space for Humanity will manage participant selection and develop research opportunities through its Citizen Astronaut Program and Labs initiative, while Virgin Galactic will provide spaceflight readiness training at Spaceport America.
The companies have not disclosed financial terms, confirmed mission dates or identified participants.
The agreement adds three planned charter missions to Virgin Galactic’s commercial spaceflight activities, subject to the companies’ future mission scheduling and preparations.
