Arrow Electronics delivered the kind of quarter distributors rarely post. Non-GAAP earnings of $6.22 per share topped the $4.98 consensus by 19.2% and cleared the $5.22 Earnings Whisper number by a wide margin. Earnings grew 158.1% year over year. Revenue of $10.718 billion rose 39.0% and beat the $9.92 billion consensus by 8.0%. It also landed above the top of management's own $9.6-10.2 billion guide. The fourth-quarter outlook goes further. Management guided to revenue of $11.55-12.15 billion and non-GAAP EPS of $7.00-7.20, both above Street expectations and another record. EPS has climbed from $5.22 in Q1 to $5.45 in Q2 and $6.22 in Q3, and Q3's 39% sales growth outpaced the 37% nine-month rate. The central tension is that the earnings trajectory is accelerating while the quality of that growth weakened in the very quarter it looked strongest.
The beat deserves scrutiny on three fronts.
The operating leverage is real. Operating income more than doubled to $430 million, and restructuring charges fell to $5 million from $36 million. But the per-dollar economics are drifting lower, not higher.
Cash is where bears have the most legitimate ammunition. Arrow used $441 million in operating cash flow in Q3, after generating $318 million in Q2 and $700 million in Q1. Inventory rose $1.4 billion to $7.3 billion. Gross debt climbed $581 million sequentially to $2.8 billion, and adjusted leverage moved to 1.9x from 1.75x. Management said roughly half the inventory build supports its AI data center rack-integration business, which it describes as margin-accretive. It also stepped up buybacks to $93 million from $43 million in Q2. Still, funding a price-inflated growth spurt with borrowed working capital is a different proposition from funding volume growth.
The call nonetheless preserved a credible demand story.
The forward risk is specific. Most supplier price increases took effect in Q3, so the Q4 Components guide of 3-8% sequential growth depends on unit volume. That is precisely the driver that faded this quarter. Leadership is also unsettled: the CEO role remains interim and the ECS president is retiring. The gap between Q4 GAAP guidance of $6.25-6.45 and the non-GAAP range reflects $0.68 per share of expected restructuring and integration charges.
Investor sentiment improved meaningfully into the report, rising to 0.61 from 0.36 after the prior quarter. Price action tells a more cautious story. Shares closed at $202.63 before the release, 3.3% below the open following the August report. They sat 18.8% beneath the $249.43 52-week high set on October 5, only 4.2% above the inter-earnings low, and 5.5% above the 200-day moving average. In other words, the stock surrendered most of its post-summer run even as expectations grew more optimistic. The trend readings are mixed, with momentum positive while AVWAP remains negative. The market setup is more complicated than the surprise implies.
The bottom line is that Arrow beat and raised decisively, and extended backlog visibility, ECS strength, and a record Q4 guide give the growth story substance. But Q3 leaned on memory pricing, margins compressed sequentially, and the company burned cash and added debt to carry the inventory. The fourth quarter becomes the real test: Arrow needs to show that unit volume can carry growth once price tailwinds fade, and that working capital starts converting back into cash.
