Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) intends to wind down production of its Cybertruck electric pickup at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, around the middle of 2027, according to Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk. The decision comes as the unconventional vehicle struggles to achieve widespread consumer acceptance, prompting the company to prioritise manufacturing capacity for its recently introduced Cybercab autonomous vehicle.
Musk disclosed the plans in a post on X on Friday, explaining that reducing Cybertruck production would allow Tesla to increase output of the Cybercab, which has become a central component of the company’s autonomous driving strategy.
It remains uncertain whether Cybertruck manufacturing will be transferred to another Tesla facility or discontinued altogether. The Austin factory is currently the only known Tesla production site equipped to manufacture the specialised components required for the pickup.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment submitted outside normal business hours.
The planned production changes reflect Tesla’s increasing emphasis on autonomous transportation and robotics as the company seeks to expand beyond its traditional electric vehicle business.
Musk has identified the Cybercab as a key product in Tesla’s ambitions to establish a large-scale driverless transportation network. The newly launched vehicle is intended to serve as the company’s primary autonomous model within its proposed robotaxi operations.
By reallocating manufacturing resources at its Texas facility, Tesla aims to increase Cybercab production capacity while reducing its commitment to the Cybertruck.
The move represents a significant change in manufacturing priorities for the Austin plant, which has been the centre of Cybertruck production since the vehicle entered the market.
Although the company has not provided details about potential alternative manufacturing locations, the specialised nature of the Cybertruck’s components could complicate any decision to relocate production.
When Tesla introduced the Cybertruck in 2023, Musk positioned the vehicle as a technologically advanced alternative to conventional pickup trucks produced by established manufacturers such as General Motors and Ford.
Its distinctive stainless-steel exterior and angular design were intended to differentiate the electric pickup from traditional models.
However, the Cybertruck has struggled to generate the level of mass-market demand initially anticipated.
The vehicle’s unconventional appearance has attracted considerable attention but has also divided consumer opinion, limiting its appeal among buyers seeking more traditional pickup designs.
Its specialised construction and distinctive engineering have further differentiated the model from other vehicles in Tesla’s product range.
The planned reduction in production suggests that Tesla is reassessing the Cybertruck’s role within its broader manufacturing and product strategy.
The Cybertruck has also faced obstacles in expanding beyond the United States.
Its sharply angled stainless-steel bodywork has complicated efforts to obtain regulatory approval in parts of Europe, where vehicle safety and design requirements differ from those in the American market.
These difficulties have restricted Tesla’s ability to introduce the pickup into several potentially important international markets.
The lack of broader European access has limited opportunities to increase sales volumes and establish the Cybertruck as a globally competitive product.
While the vehicle was originally presented as a futuristic challenger to established pickup manufacturers, its commercial prospects have remained concentrated largely in the US market.
The combination of regulatory restrictions and limited mainstream consumer appeal has contributed to uncertainty about the model’s long-term production outlook.
Despite the planned manufacturing changes, Tesla executives have emphasised the technological contribution of the Cybertruck programme.
Wes Morrill, the vehicle’s lead engineer, described the pickup as an important development platform for technologies that could be incorporated into future products.
“Cybertruck served as an exceptional platform for technological development, and its innovations will continue through Cybercab,” Morrill said in a post on X.
His comments suggest that engineering work completed during Cybertruck development could remain relevant to Tesla’s future autonomous vehicle programmes.
The company has increasingly positioned its long-term strategy around self-driving technology, robotics and automated transportation services.
Musk has repeatedly outlined his ambition to transform Tesla from a conventional electric vehicle manufacturer into a business focused more broadly on autonomous systems and robotics.
The decision to prioritise Cybercab production at the Austin factory is consistent with that strategic direction.
The planned wind-down of Cybertruck production represents another step in Tesla’s transition towards autonomous mobility.
Although the company has not confirmed whether the pickup will be manufactured elsewhere, its decision to reduce output at the only known facility capable of producing the model raises questions about the Cybertruck’s commercial future.
Meanwhile, Cybercab is expected to assume a larger role in Tesla’s manufacturing plans as the company pursues its proposed driverless transportation network.
The extent to which Tesla can expand autonomous vehicle production and develop a commercially viable robotaxi business will remain important considerations for investors.
Further details about the Cybertruck’s production schedule, potential alternative manufacturing arrangements and Cybercab output targets will help clarify how the company intends to manage the transition.
