By Zacks Equity Research | July 07, 2025, 5:45 PM

Walmart (WMT) ended the recent trading session at $99.35, demonstrating a +1.01% change from the preceding day's closing price. The stock's change was more than the S&P 500's daily loss of 0.79%. Elsewhere, the Dow lost 0.94%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq lost 0.92%.

The stock of world's largest retailer has risen by 0.91% in the past month, lagging the Retail-Wholesale sector's gain of 2.47% and the S&P 500's gain of 5.22%.

Investors will be eagerly watching for the performance of Walmart in its upcoming earnings disclosure. The company's earnings report is set to be unveiled on August 21, 2025. In that report, analysts expect Walmart to post earnings of $0.72 per share. This would mark year-over-year growth of 7.46%. Any recent changes to analyst estimates for Walmart should also be noted by investors. Such recent modifications usually signify the changing landscape of near-term business trends. With this in mind, we can consider positive estimate revisions a sign of optimism about the business outlook.

Empirical research indicates that these revisions in estimates have a direct correlation with impending stock price performance. To take advantage of this, we've established the Zacks Rank, an exclusive model that considers these estimated changes and delivers an operational rating system.

The Zacks Rank system, running from #1 (Strong Buy) to #5 (Strong Sell), holds an admirable track record of superior performance, independently audited, with #1 stocks contributing an average annual return of +25% since 1988. Over the past month, the Zacks Consensus EPS estimate has moved 0.06% higher. At present, Walmart boasts a Zacks Rank of #3 (Hold).

Investors should also note Walmart's current valuation metrics, including its Forward P/E ratio of 37.89. This denotes a premium relative to the industry average Forward P/E of 15.06.

Also, we should mention that WMT has a PEG ratio of 4.73. The PEG ratio is similar to the widely-used P/E ratio, but this metric also takes the company's expected earnings growth rate into account. The Retail - Supermarkets industry currently had an average PEG ratio of 1.87 as of yesterday's close.

The Retail - Supermarkets industry is part of the Retail-Wholesale sector. Currently, this industry holds a Zacks Industry Rank of 179, positioning it in the bottom 28% of all 250+ industries.

The Zacks Industry Rank is ordered from best to worst in terms of the average Zacks Rank of the individual companies within each of these sectors. Our research shows that the top 50% rated industries outperform the bottom half by a factor of 2 to 1.
