Vinson & Elkins said it advised Southern Company (NYSE: SO) and Georgia Power on agreements to provide up to 3.2 GW of power to OpenAI’s planned data center in Effingham County, Georgia.
The project is expected to create thousands of jobs and billions in local investment and under the 25-year agreement, OpenAI will fund all required infrastructure and electric service costs, enter into long-term energy contracts, and provide up to 1,000 MW of demand response capacity to support grid reliability and help reduce future generation needs, they said.
The V&E team was led by partners Kaam Sahely and Jackson O’Maley, with support from attorneys across the finance, restructuring, and energy regulatory practices.
