Universal Display Corporation (NASDAQ:OLED) shares gained as much as 2.1% in Wednesday pre-market trading after the company introduced OLEDX, a new device architecture designed to improve the efficiency and performance of OLED displays.
The technology was presented at the International Meeting on Information Display in Busan, Korea, where Universal Display outlined how OLEDX could improve the extraction and utilisation of light while giving display manufacturers greater control over how that light reaches viewers.
OLEDX Targets More Efficient Light Extraction
Universal Display said OLEDX has been developed to address one of the longstanding challenges facing OLED technology: light that becomes trapped within the display rather than being converted into useful output.
The architecture combines a transparent cathode, reflective anode and nanoparticle outcoupling layer to redirect trapped light. According to the company, the technology is designed to enable extraction of up to 100% of the light generated by an OLED.
OLEDX can also support ultra-wide viewing angles and adjustable efficiency profiles, potentially giving manufacturers more options when balancing brightness, efficiency and viewing characteristics.
“Our phosphorescent technology transformed the OLED industry by making essentially every electrical charge count. OLEDX is designed to make every photon count,” said Steven V. Abramson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Universal Display Corporation.
Technology Designed for Existing OLED Manufacturing
One potentially important feature of OLEDX is its compatibility with established OLED production techniques.
Universal Display said the architecture has been designed to work with existing manufacturing approaches, allowing panel producers to evaluate and potentially adopt the technology without introducing entirely new production methods.
The platform could be used across a broad range of devices, including smartphones, televisions and emerging form factors such as foldable and rollable displays.
Dr. Julie Brown, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer, said OLEDX broadens the available OLED design space and gives panel manufacturers greater flexibility to optimise performance for individual applications and user experiences.
Universal Display Expands OLED Technology Portfolio
Founded in 1994, Universal Display develops and commercialises OLED technologies and materials for display and lighting applications.
The company has built a substantial intellectual property portfolio, owning, exclusively licensing or holding sole sublicensing rights to more than 7,000 issued and pending patents worldwide.
The unveiling of OLEDX adds another technology to that portfolio as Universal Display seeks to improve OLED efficiency and provide manufacturers with greater flexibility in the development of next-generation displays.
