PulteGroup Shares Rise After Wolfe Research Upgrade

By Fiona Craig | August 24, 2026, 6:50 AM

PulteGroup (NYSE:PHM) shares gained 1.8% in pre-market trading after Wolfe Research upgraded the U.S. homebuilder to Outperform from Peerperform, highlighting the company’s stronger earnings resilience relative to competitors.

Wolfe’s latest analysis showed that its 2026 earnings-per-share forecast for PulteGroup has been reduced by just 2.7% compared with its estimate at the beginning of the year. That represents the smallest downward revision across the firm’s homebuilder coverage and compares with an average reduction of 21.4% for the peer group.

The relative stability of PulteGroup’s earnings expectations helped underpin Wolfe’s more positive stance as investors continue to assess uneven conditions across the U.S. housing market.

Citizens Maintains Market Outperform Rating

Further support came from Citizens, which maintained its Market Outperform rating on NYSE:PHM alongside a $145 price target.

Analyst James McCanless highlighted PulteGroup’s strategic emphasis on move-up homebuyers and active adult communities, two areas currently displaying some of the strongest demand trends within an increasingly divided U.S. housing market.

The assessment follows PulteGroup’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call, during which management characterised market conditions as reflecting “patient demand” and normal seasonal patterns.

The company’s quarterly performance also provided support for the positive analyst outlook. PulteGroup reported EPS of $2.48, exceeding consensus expectations by $0.12.

PulteGroup Outperforms a Subdued Broader Market

The wider U.S. equity market provided little assistance to the pre-market gain. The S&P 500 declined 0.1%, while the Nasdaq fell 0.5% and the Dow Jones was broadly unchanged.

Other major homebuilders, including D.R. Horton, Toll Brothers and Lennar, traded modestly higher, indicating some positive sentiment towards the sector. However, PulteGroup’s stronger move appeared to be driven primarily by the Wolfe Research upgrade.

The company’s relatively resilient earnings expectations also distinguish it from peers at a time when affordability pressures, mortgage rates and differing demand trends continue to influence the U.S. housing industry.

Earnings Resilience Supports Positive Analyst View

Wolfe Research’s upgrade provided the principal catalyst for PulteGroup’s pre-market advance, while Citizens’ continued positive stance and the company’s better-than-expected second-quarter earnings added fundamental support.

With its 2026 EPS forecast experiencing a substantially smaller downgrade than those of competing homebuilders, PulteGroup is demonstrating greater earnings durability despite challenging conditions across parts of the housing market.

Investors will now be watching whether demand from move-up buyers and active adult communities can continue to support results and allow NYSE:PHM to maintain its relative strength against other major U.S. homebuilders.
