Apple Launches $1,999 Foldable iPhone Duo With October Release

By Fiona Craig | September 10, 2026, 6:28 AM

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) introduced its first foldable smartphone on Wednesday, unveiling the $1,999 iPhone Duo as it enters a market that includes Samsung and Huawei.

The passport-sized device opens to a 7.6-inch display and includes a smaller external screen. Apple said the Duo is its thinnest iPhone when unfolded, although it remains thicker than some foldable devices from Chinese manufacturers.

“It’s entirely new and at the same time remarkably familiar. A similar size to your passport, it feels familiar to hold and comfortable to use with one hand,” Chief Executive John Ternus said.

The launch was Ternus’ first major product presentation as CEO. Apple’s iPhone generated $209.6 billion, representing just over half of group sales, during the company’s most recent fiscal year.

Apple Targets Foldable Market With October 23 Release

The iPhone Duo will become available on October 23 and will use Apple’s A20 Pro processor and C2 modem chip. The company said the battery provides 24 hours of mixed dual-screen use and can reach a 50% charge in about 20 minutes.

Apple also presented the Duo as a productivity device, demonstrating applications including Zoom and Slack and the ability to display multiple app windows simultaneously.

International Data Corporation expects Apple to secure about 40% of the foldable smartphone market by the end of next year, according to the supplied information. This represents an analyst forecast rather than an established outcome.

“Apple’s entry is a serious threat to Samsung, particularly in North America,” said Paolo Pescatore, founder of PP Foresight, adding that Samsung faced a competitor capable of expanding adoption of the category.

Samsung, which entered the foldable smartphone segment in 2019, has launched a publicity campaign for its own devices.

Apple Expands AI and iPhone Line-Up

Ternus also discussed Apple’s approach to artificial intelligence and privacy.

“Honestly, trust only goes so far when your data is no longer yours to control,” he said. “That’s why Apple Intelligence runs on device whenever it can.”

Apple also introduced the non-folding iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, priced from $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, $100 above the starting prices of their predecessors.

The company additionally announced updated AirPods starting at $129, as well as the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

Apple shares closed 0.3% lower at $315.34 on Wednesday following the product presentation.
