Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) announced the Nvidia Open Agent Safety Platform on September 28, an open software platform and reference system design intended to provide security controls for AI agents from testing through deployment.
The platform consists of two primary components, Nvidia OpenShell and Nvidia Sentry, and is being developed with participation from more than 100 organizations across technology, financial services, robotics and other industries.
OpenShell Provides Runtime Controls for AI Agents
Nvidia OpenShell is open-source software designed to provide a secure runtime boundary for AI agents. According to Nvidia, the software traces agent actions and enforces defined policies while agents operate on Nvidia Vera CPUs.
OpenShell can also be extended to work with third-party computing platforms, including systems based on technology from Arm and Intel.
The second component, Nvidia Sentry, is a reference system design that uses an out-of-band watchdog running on Nvidia BlueField-4 data processing units.
Nvidia said Sentry continuously monitors agent behaviour and can quarantine agents within milliseconds if they attempt to operate outside defined boundaries.
More Than 100 Organizations Work With Platform
Nvidia said more than 100 organizations are working with the Open Agent Safety Platform.
Participants include Anthropic, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Dell Technologies, Figure, HPE, Hugging Face, JPMorganChase, Microsoft, Palantir, Palo Alto Networks, Perplexity, Red Hat, Salesforce, SAP, Scale AI, ServiceNow and SpaceXAI.
Salesforce has integrated OpenShell with Slack, enabling teams to monitor agent activity and approve or reject permission requests within the application.
SAP is incorporating OpenShell into its Joule Studio runtime as part of the SAP Business AI Platform, while Scale AI is integrating the technology into the agentic infrastructure layer of its Scale GenAI Portfolio.
Robotics and Financial Services Companies Participate
Robotics companies Figure, Gecko Robotics and Skild AI are using OpenShell as they develop safety controls for AI agents operating within autonomous physical systems.
Financial services companies Citi and JPMorganChase are also collaborating with Nvidia on shared open-source technologies for AI agent safety.
Nvidia said OpenShell software and related tools are available through its developer resources and GitHub.
The platform also supports the Open Secure AI Alliance, which is governed by the Linux Foundation. According to Nvidia, the alliance was initiated with more than 120 organizations and is focused on AI agent security through open research and shared tools.
