Main Street Capital Corporation (NYSE:MAIN) has released preliminary financial estimates for the third quarter of 2026, indicating an increase in net asset value (NAV) per share and continued investment activity across its lower middle market and private loan portfolios.
The US investment company expects net investment income (NII) of between $0.87 and $0.91 per share for the three months ended 30 September 2026.
Distributable net investment income (DNII) is estimated at $0.94 to $0.98 per share, while DNII before taxes is expected to range from $0.96 to $1.00 per share.
Main Street also reported an estimated increase in NAV per share, marking what the company described as its seventeenth consecutive quarter of growth in the measure.
The figures remain preliminary and are subject to confirmation when the company publishes its full quarterly results in November.
Main Street estimates that its NAV per share reached between $34.18 and $34.26 as of 30 September 2026, compared with $33.92 at the end of June.
The projected increase of $0.26 to $0.34 per share represents quarterly growth of approximately 0.8% to 1.0%.
The improvement followed the payment of a supplemental dividend of $0.30 per share in September.
According to Main Street, the latest increase would extend its record of consecutive quarterly NAV growth to 17 quarters.
NAV per share is an important measure for investment companies because it reflects the estimated value of portfolio assets after deducting liabilities, divided by the number of outstanding shares.
The increase indicates that Main Street expects the value attributable to shareholders to have risen during the quarter, even after accounting for the supplemental dividend distribution.
Main Street expects to report an annualised return on equity exceeding 14% for the third quarter.
The measure reflects the company’s estimated profitability relative to its equity base and provides an indication of returns generated through its investment activities.
The company also disclosed preliminary portfolio credit quality figures.
As of 30 September 2026, investments on non-accrual status represented 0.9% of the total investment portfolio measured at fair value.
On a cost basis, non-accrual investments accounted for 3.5% of the portfolio.
Non-accrual status generally applies when an investment is no longer recognising interest income on an accrual basis, typically because of concerns about the borrower’s ability to meet contractual payment obligations.
The difference between the fair value and cost percentages reflects the valuation of the affected investments relative to their original investment amounts.
These figures provide an indication of portfolio credit performance ahead of the company’s complete quarterly financial disclosures.
During the quarter, Main Street Mezzanine Fund, LP, a wholly owned subsidiary licensed as a Small Business Investment Company (SBIC), received approval from the US Small Business Administration to increase its debenture borrowing capacity.
The approval raised the subsidiary’s authorised borrowing capacity by $75 million to $250 million.
Together with Main Street Capital III, LP, another wholly owned SBIC subsidiary, the company now has access to a combined $425 million in SBIC debenture borrowing capacity.
This represents a substantial proportion of the $475 million regulatory maximum available to affiliated SBIC funds.
The increased capacity provides Main Street with additional potential financing resources to support eligible investments.
SBIC debentures are part of a federal programme designed to facilitate financing for qualifying smaller businesses through licensed investment funds.
The approval expands Main Street’s available borrowing capacity, although it does not necessarily indicate that the full amount has been drawn or deployed.
Main Street reported continued investment activity during the third quarter, with transactions across its lower middle market and private loan investment strategies.
The company recorded $61.5 million in lower middle market portfolio investments during the period.
Private loan portfolio investments totalled $162.0 million.
Combined, the two categories represented $223.5 million in reported investment activity for the quarter.
Main Street’s lower middle market strategy generally involves providing financing and equity capital to smaller private companies, while its private loan business focuses on lending opportunities across privately held businesses.
The reported activity demonstrates continued deployment of capital across both investment categories.
However, the preliminary update did not provide a complete breakdown of portfolio repayments, exits or net changes in invested capital.
Those details may become available when the company publishes its full quarterly financial statements.
Main Street Capital plans to release its complete financial results for the third quarter of 2026 after the US market closes on 5 November 2026.
The company has also scheduled an earnings conference call for 6 November 2026 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
The full report is expected to provide additional detail on investment income, portfolio valuations, credit performance and financing activity.
For investors, the preliminary figures indicate continued NAV growth, positive estimated investment income and additional financing flexibility following the expansion of the company’s SBIC borrowing capacity.
The final results will provide a more complete assessment of Main Street’s quarterly performance and the factors supporting its estimated return on equity.
