M&T Bank Corporation (NYSE:MTB) reported third-quarter 2026 earnings above analyst expectations on Friday, supported by growth in its lending portfolios and a modest increase in net interest income.
The US banking group posted adjusted earnings per share of $5.08, exceeding the consensus forecast of $4.93 by $0.15. Revenue reached $2.54 billion, slightly ahead of analysts’ expectations of $2.53 billion.
M&T Bank shares advanced 1.53% in premarket trading following the announcement.
Revenue increased approximately 2% compared with $2.52 billion in the third quarter of 2025, while net income declined 2% year on year to $775 million from $792 million.
Average loans increased by $2.6 billion from the second quarter to $143.3 billion, reflecting growth across several of the bank’s principal lending categories.
The expansion was driven by higher balances in commercial real estate, consumer lending and residential real estate portfolios.
The increase in lending activity contributed to the bank’s quarterly performance, alongside stable net interest income and continued deposit growth.
Taxable-equivalent net interest income rose slightly to $1.81 billion, compared with $1.80 billion in the preceding quarter.
The modest increase indicates that the bank maintained its interest income performance while expanding its average loan balances.
Chief Financial Officer Daryl N. Bible highlighted the contribution of lending and deposit activity to the results.
“M&T’s third quarter results were highlighted by strong loan and deposit growth, stable credit and a solid capital position,” Bible said.
Although M&T Bank exceeded analysts’ earnings and revenue forecasts, its reported net income declined compared with the corresponding period last year.
Net income totalled $775 million, representing a 2% decrease from $792 million in the third quarter of 2025.
Revenue of $2.54 billion was slightly above the $2.53 billion consensus estimate and compared with $2.52 billion a year earlier.
Adjusted earnings per share exceeded expectations by approximately 3%, providing a positive comparison with market forecasts despite the decline in reported net income.
The results reflect a combination of loan growth, relatively stable interest income and higher operating costs.
M&T Bank recorded a provision for credit losses of $135 million during the third quarter, up from $120 million in the preceding quarter and $125 million in the same period last year.
The increase represents a higher quarterly expense associated with expected credit losses.
However, the bank reported an improvement in its net charge-off ratio compared with the prior year.
Net charge-offs as a percentage of average loans stood at 0.35%, down from 0.42% in the third quarter of 2025.
The allowance for loan losses declined to 1.51% of total loans, compared with 1.59% a year earlier.
These figures indicate that, despite the increase in credit loss provisions, the bank experienced a lower rate of net loan charge-offs relative to average lending balances than in the comparable period last year.
The measures provide investors with information about credit quality and the bank’s assessment of potential losses within its lending portfolio.
M&T Bank reported noninterest income of $743 million, representing a 1% decline from the third quarter of 2025.
At the same time, noninterest expense increased 2% year on year to $1.39 billion.
The rise in operating expenses reflected higher spending on technology infrastructure.
Technology-related expenditure contributed to the bank’s cost base during the quarter, partially offsetting the benefits of growth in lending and interest income.
The combination of lower noninterest income and higher operating expenses placed pressure on profitability compared with the previous year.
These developments remain relevant to the bank’s ability to maintain earnings growth while investing in its operational infrastructure.
During the third quarter, M&T Bank repurchased approximately 1.3 million shares of its common stock for a total of $323 million.
The buybacks reduced the number of shares outstanding and formed part of the bank’s capital management activities.
M&T Bank also reported an estimated Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital ratio of 10.16% as of 30 September 2026.
The CET1 ratio is a regulatory measure of a bank’s highest-quality capital relative to its risk-weighted assets and is used to assess its capacity to absorb potential losses.
The reported ratio provides an indication of M&T Bank’s capital position at the end of the quarter.
Together with the share repurchases, the figure offers investors insight into the bank’s approach to capital allocation and regulatory capital management.
M&T Bank’s third-quarter results demonstrated continued lending expansion, with average loans rising to $143.3 billion and adjusted earnings per share exceeding analyst expectations.
The bank also maintained relatively stable net interest income and reported a lower net charge-off ratio compared with the previous year.
However, the increase in credit loss provisions, higher technology expenses and decline in reported net income highlighted areas of pressure on profitability.
The 1.53% increase in premarket trading followed the stronger-than-expected earnings announcement.
Investors will continue to assess whether M&T Bank can sustain loan and deposit growth while managing credit costs, operating expenses and capital requirements in subsequent quarters.
