Forum Energy Technologies heads into its third-quarter report with something oilfield equipment makers rarely enjoy: momentum that management attributes to its own execution rather than a rising tide. Last quarter the company beat the top of its guidance across revenue, EBITDA and net income, raised its full-year outlook for the third straight time, and argued that the gains came from market-share wins rather than a better market. The stock has since climbed about 41%. That leaves this report with a narrower job and a higher bar. It no longer has to show that the turnaround is real. It has to show that last quarter's margin surprise was not a one-off.
The Street expects earnings of $1.22 per share on revenue of $233.4 million, up roughly 19% from a year ago. Earnings are projected to more than quadruple from the $0.27 posted in the same quarter last year, which shows how much operating leverage has kicked in. Sequentially, though, the forecasts call only for modest gains over the second quarter's $1.16 and $226.2 million. Management guided third-quarter revenue to $225 million to $245 million, so consensus sits comfortably inside that range, a touch below the midpoint. Analysts have already moved up sharply since the guidance was issued, when the quarterly estimate stood near $219 million. The revised full-year revenue target of $870 million to $910 million, up from $800 million to $880 million, also sits above where the Street was then.
Margins will matter more than revenue. Second-quarter EBITDA jumped 39% on an 8% revenue increase, helped by an artificial lift and downhole segment that posted roughly 25% margins and near-total incremental profit on a favorable mix. Management conceded that part of this came from strong downhole sales alongside weaker shipments of lower-margin production equipment, a balance that may normalize. Subsea backlog conversion, one of the company's three key growth drivers, also carries thinner margins because much of the content is passed through to customers. If revenue grows while EBITDA margins hold near the 14% level reached last quarter, the full-year EBITDA guide of $115 million to $125 million looks conservative. If margins slip back toward the low teens, the story becomes one of growth without leverage.
The newer catalysts deserve scrutiny too, even if they are small for now. Forum booked its first stationary power-generation cooling order and a meaningful Powertron mobile power order, and it pointed to a data center and mobile power market of several thousand engines over the next five or six years. It also won a first high-temperature frac heat-transfer order, delivered coil tubing into Venezuela with plans to expand into pressure control and coiled line pipe, and began SandGuard trials with a major Middle East producer. Follow-on orders in any of these areas would turn anecdotes into a pipeline. A book-to-bill above one, which the company has delivered in five of the last six quarters, would be the simplest sign that demand is outrunning shipments.
The risks are familiar. The Middle East accounts for about a tenth of revenue, and regional conflict has already pushed a larger opportunity there into 2027. In the U.S., frac equipment demand is still limited to replacement orders rather than the large fleet additions that would signal a real upcycle.
Sentiment has turned slightly bullish from mildly bearish a quarter ago, a modest shift that understates how much the share price has moved. The stock trades well above its 200-day moving average and just below its post-earnings high of about $90, so investors have largely priced in continued execution. For the narrative to hold, Forum needs to show that its margin gains survive a less flattering mix and that its new power and international orders are building into repeat business. Another beat with only a token guidance raise may not be enough after this kind of run.
