Brunswick Corporation (NYSE) and Winnebago Industries ((NYSE:WGO) increased their market share at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show despite a decline in overall boat sales volumes compared with the previous year, according to research from BMO Capital Markets.
The investment bank maintained its Outperform ratings on both companies, highlighting their relative strength in a challenging recreational boating market.
Attendance at the event was affected by unfavourable weather over the weekend, particularly on Sunday. However, dealers reported that visitors included a higher proportion of serious buyers despite reduced overall foot traffic.
BMO’s industry checks indicated that larger, higher-end boats and recently introduced models attracted stronger interest than the broader market.
Vessels measuring at least 28 feet performed relatively well, suggesting that demand for premium recreational boats remained more resilient than demand for smaller, entry-level products.
Among the models attracting positive attention were Winnebago’s Chris-Craft Corsair and Brunswick’s Sea Ray SLX 360.
Although overall retail unit sales declined year over year, the performance of these models helped both manufacturers strengthen their competitive positions.
Dealers also indicated that poor weather on Sunday reduced attendance but did not necessarily discourage customers who were seriously considering purchases.
Conditions across the wider recreational boating industry remain uncertain, with BMO reporting uneven retail demand outside the Fort Lauderdale event.
Dealers and other industry participants generally expect unit sales in 2027 to remain flat or decline compared with 2026.
Financing costs continue to present a challenge for potential buyers. Customers with strong credit profiles typically face interest rates of approximately 7% to 8% when financing boat purchases.
Several dealers identified lower borrowing costs and declining gasoline prices as potential catalysts for improved demand.
However, without meaningful reductions in these expenses, the industry could continue to experience subdued purchasing activity.
Average discounts offered at the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show were slightly lower than a year earlier, although promotional activity remained significant.
BMO reported an average discount of 16% across the event, compared with 17% in the previous year.
Discounting varied considerably by product category and exhibition location.
At the on-water exhibition, which featured larger premium boats, average discounts were approximately 13%.
Meanwhile, boats displayed at the convention centre, where smaller and entry-level models were more prominent, carried average discounts of 18%.
The difference reflected stronger relative demand for premium vessels and greater pricing pressure in the lower-priced segment.
Despite the modest reduction in overall discounting, numerous dealers reported that profit margins on new boat sales had come under substantial pressure during the second half of 2026.
The findings suggest that manufacturers and retailers continue to face difficult pricing conditions even as certain premium products maintain stronger demand.
Brunswick also strengthened its position in the outboard engine market during the show.
According to BMO, the company’s outboard engines accounted for 71% of boat transoms at the event, compared with 70% a year earlier.
The increase highlighted the continued competitive position of Brunswick’s Mercury Marine business in the recreational boating industry.
However, competition in the high-horsepower engine segment could intensify.
Industry participants indicated that Yamaha is developing a more powerful outboard engine intended to compete with Mercury’s 600-horsepower Verado model.
A potential introduction could take place at the Düsseldorf Boat Show in late January or the Miami International Boat Show in February.
The anticipated product launch could provide an additional competitive challenge for Brunswick in a segment where premium engine performance remains an important selling point.
BMO’s findings suggest that Brunswick and Winnebago are performing relatively well against a difficult industry backdrop, supported by their exposure to premium boats, new product introductions and established brands.
Nevertheless, the wider market continues to face pressure from elevated financing costs, uncertain consumer demand and compressed dealer margins.
The investment bank’s decision to maintain Outperform ratings on both companies reflects their relative competitive performance rather than evidence of a broad recovery in recreational boating demand.
Investors will be monitoring industry sales trends, financing conditions, fuel prices and new product competition as manufacturers prepare for the 2027 boating season.
