Ball Corporation (NYSE:BALL) reported third-quarter earnings and revenue above Wall Street expectations on Tuesday, supported by higher global aluminum packaging shipments and increased sales across its regional operations. The company also reaffirmed its 2026 outlook for double-digit comparable earnings growth and substantial free cash flow generation.
Adjusted earnings per share reached $1.10, exceeding the analyst consensus estimate of $1.07. Quarterly revenue increased 24% to $4.19 billion from $3.38 billion in the corresponding period last year, comfortably surpassing market expectations of $3.77 billion.
Ball shares edged 0.16% higher following the announcement, as investors assessed the company’s stronger sales performance and continued shareholder returns.
Ball’s third-quarter results benefited from a 4.7% increase in global aluminum packaging shipments, reflecting higher volumes across its beverage packaging operations.
The improvement contributed to the company’s 24% year-over-year revenue growth, with sales exceeding analyst forecasts by approximately $420 million.
Comparable operating earnings reached $451 million, representing a 2.5% increase from $440 million in the third quarter of 2025.
Although operating earnings increased at a slower rate than revenue, the company maintained positive earnings growth alongside higher shipment volumes.
Chief Executive Officer Ron Lewis highlighted the company’s operational performance and customer relationships.
“Ball delivered another quarter of strong results, reflecting the power of our customer-focused strategy, disciplined execution and the ownership mindset embedded throughout our organization,” Lewis said.
The results demonstrated continued demand for Ball’s aluminum beverage packaging products across its major geographic markets.
Ball’s North and Central America beverage packaging segment reported third-quarter sales of $2.06 billion.
Comparable operating earnings for the region reached $210 million, making it the company’s largest contributor among the reported geographic segments.
Packaging volumes increased by a low-single-digit percentage compared with the corresponding period last year.
The growth reflected higher shipment activity in the region, supporting the company’s overall global volume increase.
North and Central America remained an important part of Ball’s operations, accounting for nearly half of its reported consolidated quarterly revenue.
The segment’s performance contributed to the company’s stronger-than-expected sales results.
Ball’s Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) beverage packaging business generated sales of $1.33 billion during the third quarter.
Comparable operating earnings reached $170 million.
Packaging volumes increased by a mid-single-digit percentage year over year, exceeding the growth rate reported in North and Central America.
The improvement contributed to Ball’s global shipment growth and supported the company’s regional operating performance.
The EMEA results demonstrated continued expansion in packaging demand across the region, although the company did not provide individual country-level figures in the announcement.
South America recorded the strongest reported volume growth among Ball’s geographic segments.
Packaging shipments increased by a low-double-digit percentage compared with the third quarter of 2025.
The segment generated sales of $653 million and comparable operating earnings of $92 million.
The higher shipment volumes contributed to the company’s overall global packaging growth and demonstrated stronger demand in the South American business.
Although South America generated lower absolute revenue than the North and Central America and EMEA segments, its double-digit volume increase represented an important component of the quarter’s performance.
The results highlighted differences in regional growth rates, with South America expanding faster than the company’s other reported geographic operations.
Despite reporting adjusted earnings above expectations, Ball recorded a loss under US generally accepted accounting principles during the third quarter.
The company reported a GAAP loss of $0.36 per share, compared with earnings of $1.18 per share in the corresponding period last year.
The decline was primarily attributed to a $475 million noncash pension settlement charge.
Because the charge was noncash, it did not represent an equivalent cash outflow during the quarter.
However, the expense had a substantial impact on Ball’s reported GAAP earnings.
The difference between the company’s adjusted EPS of $1.10 and GAAP loss per share of $0.36 reflects the importance of distinguishing underlying operating performance from accounting charges affecting reported results.
Ball maintained its expectations for comparable diluted earnings per share growth of more than 10% in 2026.
The company also expects to generate approximately $900 million in free cash flow for the full year.
The outlook reflects management’s expectations for continued profitability and cash generation across its global beverage packaging operations.
The company did not provide an updated numerical adjusted EPS range in the announcement.
However, the projected double-digit growth indicates that Ball expects comparable earnings to increase meaningfully compared with 2025.
The free cash flow target also provides an indication of the financial resources available for shareholder distributions and other corporate priorities.
Ball continued returning capital to shareholders through share repurchases and dividends during the first nine months of 2026.
The company distributed a combined $431 million through these activities over the period.
Management stated that Ball remains on track to return at least $800 million to shareholders by the end of the year.
Achieving that target would require additional distributions of at least $369 million during the fourth quarter.
The planned shareholder returns represent a significant component of Ball’s capital allocation strategy.
The company expects full-year free cash flow of $900 million, providing a source of funding for its capital return activities.
Ball’s third-quarter results demonstrated strong revenue growth and higher global aluminum packaging shipments, with adjusted earnings and sales both exceeding analyst expectations.
Revenue increased 24% to $4.19 billion, supported by a 4.7% rise in global shipment volumes. Comparable operating earnings advanced 2.5% to $451 million.
South America delivered the strongest regional volume growth, while North and Central America remained the largest contributor to reported segment sales and operating earnings.
Although a $475 million noncash pension settlement charge resulted in a GAAP loss, the company’s adjusted earnings remained positive.
Ball continues to target comparable diluted EPS growth of more than 10% and free cash flow of approximately $900 million for 2026.
Investors will be monitoring whether the company can sustain packaging volume growth, maintain operating profitability and deliver on its commitment to return at least $800 million to shareholders by year-end.
