Montauk Renewables heads into its third-quarter report with a stock that has rallied hard and a story that still hinges on one stubborn plant. The Turkey, North Carolina swine waste-to-power facility finally began selling electricity in July after a run of delays. That makes this the first quarter in which investors can see what the project actually produces. They will also learn whether the switchgear fix management flagged last quarter got the plant running at real volume.
The Street is looking for earnings of $0.05 a share on revenue of $55.2 million. That compares with $0.04 and $45.3 million a year ago, implying growth of roughly 25% and 22%. Revenue would also edge up from the $54.0 million posted last quarter. On paper that is solid growth. The more interesting tension sits in the full-year numbers. Management lowered its 2026 revenue outlook to $198 million to $216 million from $208 million to $227 million, yet consensus for the year stands near $218.9 million. That leaves analysts above the top of the company's own range. The math behind the cut matters. Renewable natural gas guidance of $175 million to $190 million was held steady. Renewable electricity guidance was slashed to $23 million to $26 million, from $35 million to $41 million at the start of the year. The combined range now lines up neatly with the reduced total. In other words, the Street is either betting on upside in RNG or has not fully absorbed the electricity downgrade.
That makes Turkey NC the swing factor. Its timeline has slipped from the first quarter to an April or May target and finally to actual first power in July. Management then disclosed that switchgear reprogramming, expected to wrap up by mid-August, was needed before the plant could generate full volumes of swine and enhanced renewable energy credits. To validate the turnaround narrative, Montauk needs to show meaningful megawatt-hours and credit generation from the site in September. It should also reaffirm the trimmed production range of 185,000 to 195,000 MWh. Evidence of progress in credit sales beyond the existing Duke contract would help, along with continued farm hookups toward the 350,000 hog spaces under agreement. A third electricity cut, or another engineering surprise, would badly undercut credibility.
The RNG side offers a sturdier cushion. Adjusted EBITDA more than doubled to $12.3 million last quarter, helped by environmental attribute revenue from the GreenWave joint venture and lower operating and administrative costs. RIN pricing has also stabilized, with third-quarter commitments of $2.66 against a July D3 index of $2.64, well above last year's lows. Holding that pricing, and keeping GreenWave contributions rising, would support margins even as fixed-floor commodity contracts roll off. Liquidity deserves equal attention. Cash fell to $15.8 million from $25.9 million as first-half capital spending reached $61.3 million. New quarterly debt covenants also took effect at the end of June. A further drawdown without slowing capex would raise questions about financial flexibility.
The market has clearly chosen optimism. Shares have jumped about 43% since the last report while the S&P 500 slipped, and sentiment has swung from decidedly bearish to modestly bullish. At $2.41, the stock trades well above its 200-day average of $1.74. It sits, however, roughly a quarter below the $3.28 post-earnings peak, so some of the early enthusiasm has already cooled.
Ultimately, this report comes down to whether Turkey NC is now a functioning asset or still a promise. Strong RNG economics can carry the quarter. Without proof that the electricity guidance has stopped falling, though, the rally rests on a thinner foundation than the headline growth suggests.
