Research Solutions heads into its fiscal first-quarter report with a split personality. Its profitability has never looked better, yet the recurring revenue engine that is supposed to drive the long-term story has slowed for several quarters running. Last time out, management conceded that top-line growth fell short of its own hopes and pushed much of the payoff into fiscal 2027. That makes this report less about the headline numbers and more about whether the deceleration in annual recurring revenue is finally leveling off.
The Street's bar is modest. Consensus calls for earnings of two cents a share, flat with the year-ago quarter, on revenue of about $12.0 million. That would be a 2.6% decline from $12.3 million a year earlier and a touch below the $12.1 million posted last quarter. The company has not offered formal guidance, so analysts are essentially extrapolating a business where a shrinking transaction segment offsets steady growth in platform subscriptions. A flat-to-down revenue print would not surprise anyone. The more telling details sit beneath it.
Start with ARR. Total ARR growth slid from 21% early in fiscal 2026 to 14% in the third quarter and 8.5% in the fourth, ending at $22.1 million. Net incremental platform ARR roughly halved to about $317,000 last quarter, and net new platform deployments grew by only 15 year over year after running near 47. New bookings were not the problem: 61 new logos added about $961,000 in ARR at healthy pricing. The leak was churn, which rose to 46 logos and $398,000, including one account worth roughly $130,000. Management now calls churn the primary drag and has warned it will not be fixed in a single quarter. A stabilization in churn dollars, or net ARR additions climbing back toward the $500,000 range, would suggest the slowdown is bottoming. Another quarter of single-digit growth heading lower would challenge the idea that fiscal 2027 brings a turn.
The new catalyst is the pair of MCP products that connect ChatGPT and Claude to the company's Site and Article Galaxy platforms, with Resolute's patent, clinical trial and grant databases built in. Management cited a pipeline above $1 million and usage-based pricing that runs at a multiple of typical seat usage, and said the launch was helping reverse declines in the consumer business. One quarter is early, but investors should want evidence that some of that pipeline is converting, whether through early revenue, customer counts or commentary on usage trends. Signs that B2C conversion and retention gains are holding would also matter, since that segment was flat only because acquisition costs fell.
Profitability is the cushion. Gross margin reached 51.7% last quarter on a mix shift toward platform revenue, now 43% of sales, and operating expenses stayed tight. Holding margins above 51% while transaction revenue shrinks would show the mix story is durable. Cash flow deserves attention too, after operating cash fell to $1.0 million from $2.9 million a year earlier. With acquisitions stalled over valuation gaps, organic execution is the whole story for now.
The market has not been patient. Shares are down 15% since the last report against a 3% slip for the S&P 500, and at $1.82 they sit well below the 200-day average of $2.29 and just above the post-earnings low of $1.77. The trading range has shifted lower from the prior quarter's $2.00 to $2.45 band. Sentiment remains heavily bearish, though less extreme than before the last report. That leaves room for relief if ARR steadies, but the central question is simple: can Research Solutions show that churn has peaked and that its AI products are beginning to refill the recurring revenue pipeline, or does the payoff slip further out?
