Later this year, engineers will start working with foreign suppliers to produce mass prototypes. Internally known as the N401, the glasses will have cameras, microphones, speakers, and Siri integration, allowing for voice calls, music playback, turn-by-turn navigation, and live translation. The gadget is meant to compete with the increasingly popular Ray-Ban smart glasses from Meta.

As per the reports, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has abandoned plans for a camera-equipped Apple Watch and Watch Ultra, which were originally scheduled for 2027. There are still worries about Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s weak AI capabilities because Google and Meta use their Llama and Gemini platforms to create comparable wearables.

The initiative is being led by Apple's Vision Products Group, which created the Vision Pro headset and is also developing further iterations of the device. While AR glasses with built-in screens remain a long-term objective, Apple sees its smart glasses as an important milestone in its AI hardware approach.
