Apple (AAPL) Expands Gaming Strategy with New Dedicated App

On May 28, Bloomberg reported that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) plans to introduce a dedicated gaming app across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV as part of its upcoming iOS update in September. The app will debut at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9, just days after the expected launch of Nintendo’s (OTC:NTDOY) Switch 2 console on June 5.

The new app will be like a centralized hub for gaming, consolidating achievements, leaderboards, communications, and editorial content. It will replace the long-standing but underperforming Game Center and promote its subscription offering, Apple Arcade, which is available for $6.99 per month. Notably, Apple generates around two-thirds of its App Store revenue from gaming, including the sale of games and in-app purchases.

Separately, the company also announced the acquisition of RAC7 Games, a relatively small game developer. This is Apple’s first acquisition of a game developer, further signaling its commitment to gaming.

That said, Apple’s position in high-end gaming continues to lag behind that of competitors, such as Windows-based PCs. While this recent push will make Apple products easier to use for gaming, reports suggest that it is still an uphill task for the company to be considered as a significant name by serious gamers and studios creating high-end games.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) designs, manufactures, and markets innovative products, including the iPhone, iPad, Mac computers, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. The company also offers a range of software and services, such as the iOS and macOS operating systems, iCloud, advertising, payment services, Apple Music, and the App Store.
