Alvotech Shares Rise 5.6% After Barclays Upgrades Rating and Doubles Price Target

By Fiona Craig | September 16, 2026, 6:53 AM

Alvotech (NASDAQ:ALVO) shares gained 5.6% in premarket trading after Barclays upgraded the biosimilar drug developer from Underweight to Overweight and raised its price target from $4.00 to $8.00.

The bank cited changes in Alvotech’s regulatory outlook following the conclusion of a US Food and Drug Administration inspection at the company’s manufacturing facility in Reykjavik, Iceland.

The upgrade reverses Barclays’ previous assessment of the company, which had included concerns about debt levels and capital expenditure commitments.

FDA Inspection Outcome Supports Revised Assessment

Barclays highlighted the FDA’s decision to close its May 2026 inspection of Alvotech’s Reykjavik manufacturing facility with a Voluntary Action Indicated (VAI) classification.

A VAI classification means the agency identified conditions that may warrant voluntary corrective action but does not currently intend to pursue regulatory or administrative enforcement.

The inspection outcome was a central factor in Barclays’ revised assessment of Alvotech’s regulatory position.

Following the inspection, Alvotech resubmitted biologics licence applications in June for proposed biosimilars referencing Simponi, Eylea and Prolia/Xgeva.

The FDA has set review completion goal dates of 4 December 2026 for the applications. These dates represent regulatory review targets rather than confirmed approval dates.

The agency has also accepted a biologics licence application for AVT16, Alvotech’s proposed biosimilar to Entyvio, with a regulatory decision anticipated in early 2027.

The applications remain subject to FDA review, and their approval has not been confirmed.

Barclays Reverses Previous Rating

Barclays analyst Glen Santangelo raised his price target for Alvotech to $8.00 from $4.00 while changing the rating to Overweight from Underweight.

Santangelo had previously reduced his target to $4.00, citing concerns about the company’s leverage and planned capital expenditure.

The latest assessment places greater emphasis on the completed manufacturing inspection and the company’s upcoming regulatory review milestones.

The revised target represents Barclays’ valuation assessment rather than a guaranteed future share price.

Shares Outperform Broader US Market

Alvotech’s 5.6% premarket increase exceeded gains in the major US equity indices reported around the same period.

The S&P 500 was up 0.2%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.1%, and the Nasdaq advanced 0.4%.

Alvotech shares remained below their 52-week high of $9.25.

The company’s next regulatory milestones include the FDA’s December review targets for its resubmitted biosimilar applications and the anticipated decision on AVT16 in early 2027.

The timing and outcomes of those reviews remain subject to the FDA’s assessment.
