Boeing Speeds Up 737 Manufacturing as Safety and Quality Standards Rise

Doug Ackerman, VP of Quality at The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) Commercial Airplanes, stated that the company intends to stabilize 737 MAX production at 38 airplanes per month.

This follows a mid-air panel explosion in January 2024 that prompted the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to cap production at that level. According to sources with knowledge of the situation, Boeing is now on schedule to reach the 38-plane objective in May, though the firm will not confirm the number. According to CEO Kelly Ortberg, the FAA will not raise the cap until Boeing shows steady production. Boeing intends to start construction on a fourth production line after things have settled. This year's Chief Aerospace Safety Officer Report also shows that the business is improving on six internal quality and safety measures.

The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA)'s 737 MAX program has seen several crises, including production unpredictability and safety concerns, resulting in roughly $12 billion in losses last year. The number of safety problems that employees reported through the company's "Speak Up" system jumped by 220% between 2023 and 2024. Since then, Boeing has strengthened oversight by designating impartial managers to conduct safety evaluations.

Furthermore, machine learning is being used to identify supply chain quality threats. Don Ruhmann, chief aerospace safety officer, mentioned continuous changes meant to improve transparency and corporate safety culture.
