OpenAI In Talks To Raise Billions From Nvidia, Amazon, Microsoft: Report

By Namrata Sen | January 29, 2026, 3:19 AM

OpenAI Inc. is reportedly in discussions to secure funding of nearly $40 billion from its major suppliers, NVIDIA Corp(NASDAQ:NVDA), Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), and Microsoft Corp(NASDAQ:MSFT).

NVIDIA could potentially invest up to $20 billion in OpenAI, while Amazon is considering an investment of $10 billion or more. Microsoft, which already holds a 27% stake in OpenAI, is also expected to make a significant investment, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

According to another report by The Information, the funding that OpenAI is seeking from these tech giants is $60 billion.

It is unclear whether the potential $20 billion investment from NVIDIA would be in addition to the $100 billion deal or if it would lead to a revision of the terms between the two companies, the FT reported.

OpenAI, Microsoft, Amazon, and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Benzinga‘s requests for comment.

OpenAI Eyes $100 Billion Funding, Q1 Close

The news comes on the heels of reports that Japanese conglomerate SoftBank (OTC:SFTBY) is in talks to invest up to $30 billion more in OpenAI. Reports earlier this month also suggested that CEO Sam Altman was courting top investors in the Middle East to raise $50 billion in funding. The round is likely to be closed during the first quarter of 2026.

OpenAI is seeking to raise up to $100 billion at a valuation of $830 billion to support its expansion plans, which require substantial data center capacity. Besides fundraising, ChatGPT announced it would begin testing advertisements in its Free and Go tiers, but Altman said ads would not influence responses and advertisers would not have access to user conversations.

Meanwhile, Altman said AI advances are enabling employees to produce more with smaller teams, leading the company to slow its hiring pace even as it continues to add staff. He noted that AI has significantly increased worker productivity, allowing OpenAI to grow output with fewer people.
